At ENT & Allergy Center of Austin, we treat both acute and chronic ear infections using evidence-based medical care and advanced ENT expertise.
What Is an Ear Infection?
An ear infection occurs when bacteria or viruses cause inflammation and fluid buildup in the ear. This most commonly affects the middle ear, but infections can also occur in the outer ear canal.
There are three main types:
Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media) – Common in children; often follows a cold or sinus infection
Outer Ear Infection (Swimmer’s Ear) – Infection of the ear canal
Chronic Ear Infection – Recurring or persistent infection that may affect hearing
Proper diagnosis is essential because treatment depends on the type and severity.
Common Symptoms
Ear pain or pressure
Hearing difficulty
Fluid drainage from the ear
Fever (especially in children)
Irritability in infants and toddlers
Fullness or “clogged” sensation
Balance problems
If symptoms last more than a few days or keep returning, it’s time for an ENT evaluation.
Why Do Ear Infections Happen?
Ear infections often develop due to:
Upper respiratory infections
Allergies
Sinus congestion
Eustachian tube dysfunction
Fluid buildup behind the eardrum
Children are more prone because their Eustachian tubes are smaller and more easily blocked.
How We Treat Ear Infections
Your treatment plan depends on the cause and severity of the infection.
Medical Management
-
Prescription antibiotics (when appropriate)
-
Anti-inflammatory medications
-
Ear drops
-
Pain management recommendations
For Recurring Infections
If infections keep returning or fluid does not clear, we may recommend:
-
Ear tube placement (tympanostomy tubes) to relieve pressure and prevent fluid buildup
-
Evaluation for allergies or sinus issues contributing to chronic infections
Our goal is not just to treat the infection, but to prevent it from becoming a long-term issue.
When to See an ENT Specialist
Schedule an appointment if:
Infections recur multiple times per year
Hearing seems affected
Fluid persists for several weeks
Pain is severe
There is drainage from the ear
A child has speech delays related to hearing concerns
Early evaluation can prevent complications and protect long-term hearing.
