Sore throats are a pain in the neck. Internally. And for those who suffer frequently, it could be something serious to see us about. But the occasional raspy and painful event doesn’t require antibiotics. As a matter of fact, this so-called miracle drug doesn’t work for a viral infection.
A sore throat might simply be a symptom of breathing through your mouth too much, dryness in the environment or a quick change in the weather. There’s the possibility of strep infection in the throat. When that happens and lasts more than a couple of days, make an appointment with the ENT Center of Austin. Could be a bigger fish than you can fry alone.
A simple issue probably doesn’t mean you need to go nuts. Instead, head to the kitchen to relieve the matter.
Try This On For Size
These are not remedies or cures. Just a few things you might have in your pantry can ease the pain temporarily:
- Could be your immune system is weak. A nice tall glass of orange juice a few times a day will boost your ability to fight-off a sore throat.
- Shut up. Rest your voice for a day.
- There are a couple of things you can gargle with that may help:
- Warm salt water will pop-up the circulation in the throat.
- A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in a glass of water can kill-off the bacteria. Just brush your teeth afterwards as cider can scrub the enamel from your choppers.
- Measure a little powdered cinnamon in a glass of water mix it with two tablespoons of honey and a pinch of ground pepper. Boil it and gargle.
- Combine one-teaspoon of sage in a cup of boiling water. Add a teaspoon of cider vinegar and honey. Make this brew and gargle with it four times a day.
- Green onions and chives, simmered in water for 5-minutes. Drink this as a tea.
- Down at least 8-glasses of room temperature water a day to rinse-out the infections quickly from your system.
- Stay away from cold or fried foods. That should also include cold beverages.
- Eat some boiled beets that have reached room temperature. Figs are good, too.
- Get some throat lozenges that contain zinc or slippery elm. Steer clear of the mint or menthol ones. They will only make matters worse.
- An extremely natural antiseptic is garlic. Sound weird to gobble down a cup of garlic tea, but frankly it will quench that sore throat. Likewise repels vampires.
Again, if you suspect you have strep, see us. We’ll prescribe a treatment regimen. The swell thing about the above suggestions are that you can still use these kitchen-made solutions with your medication.
Chronic sore throats are another matter. If you’re drifting into those rough waters, ring us up at the ENT Center of Austin right away. We want to neutralize that pain in the neck before it spreads to your butt.
